Local Attractions
Attractions:
There are so many varied attractions appealing to visitors of all ages in Niagara on the Lake, below are just a few. Indeed Niagara on the Lake was recently selected as one of the top destination choices by the New York Post, and has been designated a National Historic Site because of its stock of Regency and Classical Revival buildings from the post-war of 1812 period, considered to be the best in the country. 1. Shopping The main shopping area along Queen Street offers a unique experience, one of a kind boutiques, gourmet food stores, bakeries, art galleries, an organic tea shop, and the oldest apothecary in Ontario. Just off queen street you will find an “old fashioned” privately owned book store, a little treasure trove for book lovers. You will also find two very good “pubs” serving pub style fare - The Angel Inn - (an English style pub said to be the oldest continuously running pub in North America - and it is haunted!), and the Irish Harp, a pub with the accent on all things Irish – including Guinness!
2. Golf Courses There are many first class golf courses within easy driving distance, plus the oldest 9 hole golf course in North America, within walking distance!
3. Theatre The Shaw Festival, which started in 1962, has 3 theatres and has been justifiably been described in the US media, as “the best repertory company in North America”. A visit to our town wouldn’t be complete without going to see a one – or more – of the first class plays.
4. Wineries and tours There are many wineries in the Niagara Region, many of which are “boutique” in size and only sell their wines on their premises. Many have won international prizes and recognition for the quality of their wines - which are well worth researching and sampling. Excellent , educational wine tours (with or without lunch or dinner included) are available either by mini bus with knowledgeable drivers or on bicycles.
5. Cycling and Hiking If you like to cycle, Niagara on the Lake has miles of cycle paths. Bring your own bikes or hire ‘state of the art’ bikes locally. Cycling along the Niagara Parkway is an experience not to be missed, just wonderful. Not up to cycling? Take a horse drawn carriage ride with knowledgeable drivers who will point out the many places of interest. Hikers will enjoy following the Bruce Trail which passes through Niagara on the Lake.
6. Dining There are so many first class restaurants and tea shops in the Niagara area that many visitors make dining at them part of their Niagara on the Lake experience. They cater to all tastes – more formal “fine” dining, less formal “bistros”, as well as smaller ones, such as “Ginger” which specializes in delicious South East Asian style food
Miscellaneous
7. Antique stores, potteries, historic sites, museums, jet boat rides on the rapids of the Niagara River, fishing, helicopter and fixed wing flights over the Niagara area, including the Falls. Guided walks through the town giving an insight into the fascinating history of the “prettiest town in Canada”. Guided ghost tours in the evenings.
8. Roadside stands selling wonderful locally grown fruits and produce. Peach and strawberry festivals when they are in season. Thousands of acres of vineyards and fruit orchards.
9. Beautiful homes and buildings, breathtaking gardens, bursting with magnificent flowers and trees. Many historic sites, including Fort George, Butler’s Barracks etc.
10. Stroll down to the lake and watch boats racing on Lake Ontario and see the skyline of Toronto in the distance
11. Pamper yourself at a first class spa located in the Prince of Wales Hotel, a 3 minute walk away.
12. Niagara Falls is 20 minute drive from Niagara on the Lake. The Falls are a “must see” for first time visitors to the area. If you enjoy visiting Outlet Malls, Lundy’s Lane is a paradise, lots of outlet stores! On your return trip drop into the Horticultural School and Arboretum, or take a hike in the Niagara Glen, unspoiled beauty where you can walk right beside the raging Niagara River. Afterwards return “home” to the beauty and tranquility of Niagara on the Lake and enjoy a glass of Niagara wine on the deck!
13. The Niagara Glen is a bird watchers paradise.
